Course Structure

Module 1 - Getting Started

After a short intro from your tutor, Jay takes you through setting up Cubase correctly in preparation for our Psytrance track that we're going to make together. After this, we bring in a hard hitting kick drum (all samples, projects etc and included in the download zip) and we EQ this kick drum to make it even more punchy and Psytrance-esq. Next is the 2nd most important element to our track, the bass. Jay shows you how to get the most out of the bass sample and how to sidechain it in many different ways (if you're using Elements) so we end up with a banging Psytrance kick and bass full of movement and energy! Finally in this module, Jay shows you how to layer 3 snares together correctly to make one fat clap / snare, again typical of this genre.

Module 2 - Making FX

After the kick and bass, Psytrance is all about the sound FX. There are literally tonnes of them all dotted about in this genre, all within their own 3D space. In this module we learn how to make our own FX and also how to bring in samples and adapt them to what we need. For example, we learn how to add resonance, filter sweeps, timestretch, add reverb, delay, filter the delays, add flanger, gated fx etc. We make all kinds as long as they sound like Psytrance FX. We make sure we have dark and sinister FX along with hi-pitched, resonated ones to fill out all areas of the mix. We start to mix the track and place these sounds as we go along so the mixing lessons later on are not so intensive.

Module 3 - The Psy Arp

Next we move onto the very important Psytrance Arpeggiator. This is another driving force in this genre and it's vital to get this right to provide the mid-range energy flow and movement within your track. We make this from scratch in Cubase's own built-in synth 'Retrologue'. (if you don't have this synth don't worry as we provide all the dry and wet audio in the workfiles, along with everything else that you'll need). So, here you'll get a basic understanding of subtractive synthesis whilst creating your own Psytrance style arp. Keeping the arp interesting is key so you will learn how to automate 5 or so parameters as the sound plays to add variety, interest and movement. More FX are also made in this Module.

Module 4 - Homemade Vocals

So now it's time for a bit of fun! In this Module Jay shows you how to record your own Psytrance speech and tribal chants. Joking aside he shows you how easy it is and that you don't always need to pay for a professional. You'll learn how to setup the inputs and your microphone correctly in Cubase, how to record and of course the vital step - how to mix the material to fit with our Psytrance genre. Including pitching FX, reverb, delay, compression, time-stretching etc. He also shows you how to 'auto generate' extra harmony voices for that vocoder feel and to add variety to the vocal material. Finally, and again to help the vocals sit better within the mix you'll learn how to take a part of it, add reverb and then reverse it for an interesting effect.

Module 5 - Arrangement

In Module 5 we tackle the often frustrating part of structuring a full track and how exactly to make a loop into a full pro song. Jay shows you the typical sections and lengths of a Psytrance track and how to create and label them to make your workflow easier. You'll learn how to easily create these different sections and the reasons behind each one. Mostly we are trying to keep the listener pulled into our track from start to finish and this is done by tension and release. With the use of breakdown and buildup sections we can lower and increase the energy throughout our track and Jay teaches you exactly how to program these very important parts. You'll also be adding more leads, FX and more to help fill out this banging Psytrance track.

Module 6 - Mixing & Mastering

So what we have now is many, many different elements, all with different frequencies and they all need to be mixed together with precision otherwise the track just won't sound good, professional or have the energy this genre screams out for. It will also die when played within a set of other professionally mixed Psytrance tracks. Over a number of lessons, Jay shows you how to do this by balancing frequency, volume and 3D space (left to right, front to back, bottom to top). This is a long process and patience is required but it's like anything - the more you practice it the better you will become. He also shows you some basic mastering tips that you can apply to all your tracks and finishes up with some promotion advice.
