Module 1 - Getting Started

After a quick check of the settings we'll dive right in and start bringing in our first sounds. Creating a custom swung house beat to act as the foundation for our chart topper track using one shot drums. We'll also use some of the new features of 'sampler track 2' which is new in Cubase 11 to take a drum loop and fit it to our chosen rhythm. All the while through this we'll be discussing the end goal of creating maximum listener engagement and why we are doing this the way we are, so you learn as you progress, making the track step by step with us.

Module 2 - Chords & Melodies

So we have a basic beat, but we need to add the soul of our track; the melody. This is very easily done, even if you don't have any music theory knowledge as Cubase comes with some great tools to help you. The melody of the track is super important as it will spike a listener's interest, and if done right will keep them pulled into your music. You can use 'Chord Pads' in Cubase to help you come up with a basic chord progression, and with a bit of guidance you can learn to make this more complex and interesting by using simple and easy to repeat techniques.

Module 3 - Effects & Instruments

To be able to really make unique and 'one of a kind' music, it's important you know how to create your own sounds. In this module you will start to learn the basics of synthesis using Cubase's Retrologue (or a free synth) by making your own bass-line, leads, arps and pad sounds. You will also use compression, side chain compression, EQ, filters, saturation, reverb, delay and many more plugins - More importantly, you will learn how, why and when you should use these plugins in your own tracks to get maximum impact.

Module 4 - Song Structure & Automation

Correct song structure is incredibly important in any genre, but even more so in POP music. You have to be able to create a sense of tension and release throughout the track that makes your track a fun and exhilarating experience to listen to. Here you will learn about how the energy of the track should flow in order to achieve maximum engagement. Using the verse, chorus, verse structure is only half of the puzzle, in order to fully unlock this puzzle you need to understand the energetic flow throughout your mix.

Module 5 - Recording

Of course vocals are one of the most important elements in any POP track and need to be treated with care throughout the entire process from recording to post production. In this module you will learn how to setup Cubase for recording, how to get the best sound in any environment, and of course we then go deeply into post production and learning how to tweak the performance of the singer using many techniques like comping, pitch correction, timing correction, formant shifting and much much more.

Module 6 - Mixing & Mastering

With POP music it is vital that you get a great final result. In this module you will start to see how all of the prior work we have done starts fitting together. You will gain a really great insight into what leads to an effortless mix, and then how to make the final changes that lead to a balanced, lively and engaging track. We will be using all the built in processes needed in Cubase to achieve this, followed by the icing on the cake where we get the track to open up at the mastering stage, before finally rendering out our completed track.
