Module 1 - Intro and Drums
After a short intro and a look at the origins of techno, your tutor Jay takes you through setting up your project. He then shows you where to find samples within Cubase like Racks and Groove Agent and where to find authentic Techno samples on the net. He also explains the different ways to get the samples into Cubase for manipulation and using in built tools such as Beat Designer. We audition and find a Techno kick drum within Groove Agent and learn how to manipulate and adapt the sample. A similar process is used with the Hi-Hats and this time we manipulate the structure of the sound using Envelope Shaper and reverb. With the clap, Jay shows you how to glue 3 different claps together to make 1 huge clap making sure not to end up with just a mess - a very useful technique!
Module 2 - Bass & Sub Bass
The bass is the driving force of your techno track and it's very important to get the energy right. In this second module, we continue to build the foundation of the track by adding a bassline to the drums. Learn how to make a techno sub bass with Cubase's Retrologue VST synth and tweak it to your needs. Jay also teaches how to sync the note to be in tune with the kick drum so they sit together musically. He then shows you how to add an additional bassline over the top to compliment the sub line. This is made with an authentic TB303 sample which is sampled and manipulated via Groove Agent, the in-built vst / drum machine.
In the last section, stock distortion plugins are used to give the effect of tape saturation together with some reverb and EQ to help the new bass line sit with the sub.
Module 3 - High & Mid Range
So the foundations of the track have been built. We now need to build up from this with the mid and high elements. Jay shows you how a simple percussive wood hit can be manipulated and transformed into an effective high pitched lead line via Groove Agent. He uses techniques such as pitch shift, quantize and swing to get the desired rhythm. We then focus on a mid range synth stab to drive the track along further using another stock VST, Halion. Of course it is manipulated with distortion, reverb, EQ to help sit within our mix. Jay explains the importance of producing with your own original sound. He shows you how to create your own ring modulation type synth sound that fits well with this techno track. Resonance, glide, distortion are all used within Retrologue to bring it to life.
Module 4 - Arrangement / Track Structure
Ahh, the one place most people go wrong or need help with the most! The structure of the track!
Jay shows you a simple and easy way on how to structure this track and any future tracks you may produce.
In the 2nd arrangement lesson we talk about the different sections of a typical electronic track and show you clearly the lengths, characteristics and reasons for each part. We include dynamics, tension, release, variation, interest and more. Here the intention is always to keep the listener pulled in and interested in our track throughout the various different sections.
Module 5 - FX & Variation
In section 5 we teach you how and where to add effects within your track and the reasons why. You will learn a number of techniques on creating your own sounds and manipulating them in such a way that they fit into the mix and importantly tie sections together. We also teach how to automate these effects such as the reverb time and delays so they get bigger/longer over time to increase tension and release. Another skill Jay teaches is how to create your own white noise sweep and learn how to use autopan, chopper, flange and cut-off modulation to add interest. Talking about keeping the interest, we show what things can be changed in the second half of the track to achieve this.
Module 6 - Mixing & Mastering
No one is going to want to hear your track if it sounds like a mess, so it's really important to get the elements of your mix balanced together. Jay explains that you need to think of 3 different axis whilst mixing rather than just left / right stereo spread. We teach different methods in gaining stereo width and reverb is used along with volume automation to take care of 'front to back' mixing. During the mixing stage, Jay bumps into a 'low-end' problem at high volumes which needs addressing. In the final lesson Jay shows you the best way to approach basic mastering with Cubase stock plugins and you'll learn his 7 step approach to home mastering.
