Course Structure

Course Structure

Module 1 - Making a Trap Beat

There are many things that give Trap music it's particular feel. The beat is of course important and is also the foundation on which we build our track. Here you will make your Trap beat and start getting that 'attitude' which is associated with the genre. You can consider this a warm up to the tutorial, covering the basics of making a beat in Cubase, importing sounds, basic editing amongst other things and starting to use the 'sampler track' which is both a simple and yet powerful tool in Cubase (9 and above). We'll also start to apply basic effects like reverb and using basic routing like FX sends to start mixing the track from an early stage

Module 2 - Sound Design - Synthesis & Sampling

You'll use Cubase 'chord pads' to make a chord progression that we then use to create the musical structure of our track (no music theory knowledge required). Then with a sound design approach we'll be using various different tools in Cubase. Everything from a detailed look at synthesis in Retrologue 2, designing everything step by step and covering all the features from a simple pad to a deep and pounding sub bass. We'll be looking in detail at combining other instruments like the new Halion FLUX wavetable synth, the sampler track and plug in effects to achieve the sounds we want

Module 3 - Sound Design - SFX Trapitude

By this point we have almost all the sounds designed and the musical structure (leads, arpeggiators, pads, bassline etc) all ready to go, but in order to make it sound like a Trap tune it has to have an attitude (or, if you're cheesy like us 'Trapitude'). This requires using the sounds we have already made combined and arranged with SFX sounds in a unique way to promote that feel that is so common in this genre. The secret is to use a blend of the right SFX with a touch of minimalism and good placement which makes the sounds really stand out and sound big in the mix

Module 4 - Arrangement & Automation

Here we'll dive into building the track into an exciting arrangement and start bringing it to life so it's ready for the singer. You'll learn how to make a radio edit with 2 choruses, 2 verses and an intro and bridge. Getting this right is vital to keeping the listener pulled into your tracks. You'll learn to program kick and snare rolls and use them and other effects to build tension and release in your tracks. When the track is arranged we'll be bringing it to life with automation which is when the song starts to gain some emotional depth. You'll learn to automate various parameters of plug ins and instruments in Cubase

Module 5 - Vocals

In this comprehensive module we'll look at how to go about finding a singer to collaborate with online and effectively write and perform vocals for a split rather than an upfront fee. Once we have the vocal we'll be going through the various stages that are required to get it to a professional and polished level. Starting with 'comping' the best takes together and then pitch correcting in Cubase's 'Vari Audio'. Then timing correction using 'Warp' in the audio editor and general editing to get the performance as tight as possible. Last but not least we'll go through processing the vocal and which effects and in which order these should be applied

Module 6 - Mixing & Mastering Your Trap Tune

Of course mixing and mastering are the vital final steps of music production. Balance is the key here so we will look at each sound and make final decisions on whether they truly belong in the arrangement. We'll make sure that every element has it's own space and is not 'shouting' over the top of any other element. Using compressors to balance the dynamics, EQ for the frequencies and general volume changes we will give the track a professional polish. In the very last lesson we will take a look at mastering the track and making any final 'overall' adjustments to the mix before volume maximizing and rendering
