Module 1 - Bassline & Melody
After a short intro Jon teaches you the technique to make a fat, wonky, chopped up bass line from using nothing more than a simple bit of midi and some VST patches. Once you know this technique, they'll be no looking back! You'll learn how to EQ the different parts of the bass line ready for layering with a sub bass and how to layer with other synth patches to add depth and consistency. The bassline concludes by applying sidechain compression to give the bass line a snappy feel. Jon then moves onto the melody and shows you how to use the'Chord Track' feature to make a 4 bar chord progression without having to have any music theory knowledge whatsoever. He also teaches you how to make an effective arpeggio riff out of the chords you've just created.
Module 2 - Drum Programming
Onto Module 2 where you'll learn all about programming drums to sound fat and punchy. Jon starts with how to pick the right samples (one-shots) and which samples to use for effective drum layering. A great technique taught in this lesson is how to layer up the snare to maximise fatness, snap and crunch, not forgetting how to add depth (and adding the correct amount) using reverb on the drums. Next Jon shows you how to add rhythm and movement to the drums using percussive elements. Next, it's that secret technique again - layering. This time it's the ride cymbals turn which is so important in Drum and Bass. We finish with how to transfer the drums to different sections of the track to create a consistent feel throughout the track in all sections.
Module 3 - Structure / Arrangement
In Module 3 we tackle what most people have trouble with - how to structure the different sections of your track! Jon teaches exactly how to create the effective sections of your track; eg. Intro section, half-step section, breakdown / build up section, drum & Bass section, drum & Bass breakdown section, outro section. He also teaches you how to change the dynamics of the track creatively by removing elements / mixing up the different drum elements present to create variation and keep things interesting. Also learn how to modify the bass line to build up or end sections. This also keeps the track varied and interesting and helps in creating 'tension & release' (necessary to really create a hit dance track no matter the genre).
Module 4 - Adding FX, Fills and Automation
Module 4 is all about those very important breakdowns, buildups, FX and fills. In other words, how to add personality to your track. Learn useful functions within the arrange window and advanced filtering techniques.
Learn some simple but advanced automation techniques to give the track life and make it flow smoothly from one section to another. You'll also learn how to create 'tension' in the buildup and 'release' in the drop.
Module 5 - Vocal Sample
In this next section we teach you how to take a medicore vocal sample and modify and manipulate it to fit in with the track in a melodic and rhythmic way. Learn to chop, stretch and place a simple vocal sample to create tension & release within the mix and to make fills or improve current fills using a vocal sample. We add simple FX to make mono vocals sound bigger, give them depth and stereo presence and use creative panning to give the vocals a more exciting and lively feel.
Module 6 - Advanced Mixdown
In Module 6 we start with the best way to approach mixing a track. Moving on, Jon teaches you h ow to professionally balance all the elements within your track by using EQ, compression, panning, reverb and much more. Learn h ow to use EQ to find problem frequencies and correct them. Create different depths for elements using reverb and learn h ow to add 'bite' to a clean vocal to give it more presence and life. Finally Jon teaches you how to m aximise the volume of the overall mix with some basic mastering.
