Course Structure

Module 1 - Drums & Bassline

Your tutor Jay starts off with a look at the 80s style VST synths available on the market at present (a lot are free). He then talks you through the template and how the 80s drum module was made in Groove Agent. Next it's on to beat creating and getting that 80s sound. We keep this simple to start with and quickly move onto making your own bass line in Retrologue. We'll be making a number of sounds so you'll get to learn a bit about synthesis along the way. To complement this bassline and to add warmth and body, Jay shows you how to layer it up with one of the VSTs mentioned above and how to add the appropriate effects to it.

Module 2 - Chords & Melody

In this 2nd module Jay will show you how to come up with a chord progression and melody using simple music theory and the fantastic tools available in Cubase for beginners. So firstly you see how a typical 80s pad is made. Then you will learn how to use Cubase Chord Pads, a fantastic tool in helping you come up with a chord progression in no time. Next it's more sound design and synthesis with making the main lead for this track (inspired by the Miami Vice theme). You also get to make a 2nd lead for other sections of the track. This involves remaking yourself a lead sound from one of the free VSTs. All of this comes with basic music theory tips.

Module 3 - Filling Out The Track

So we have a basic beat with 2 leads and a chord structure. It's now time to start filling out the track. We add a huge 80s snare with enormous but controlled reverb which instantly parks this track in the 80s zone. We add more lo-fi drum samples such as Toms and Hats to make it more interesting for the listener and to drive the track's energy in different places. You also learn how to make an arpeggiator, a backing melody line, another pad sound and a middle 8. All of these elements are EQ'd and have effects applied to help them sit in the mix better and have their own purpose and space.

Module 4 - Arrangement / Song Structure

The one place most people go wrong or need help with the most is the structure of the track!

Jay shows you a simple and easy way on how to structure this track and any future tracks you may produce. Learn about the different sections of a typical electronic track and the lengths, characteristics and reasons for each part. You will learn about; dynamics, energy curve, tension, release, variation and creating interest. Here the intention is always to keep the listener pulled in and interested in our track throughout the various different sections. This is an area that often gets overlooked in production so it's important to get it right.

Module 5 - Creating FX

In Module 5 you will learn how and where to add effects within your track and the reasons why. You will learn techniques on creating your own 80s style sounds, in particular the famous SID Chip sound from the Commodore 64 and manipulating them in such a way that they fit into the mix and importantly tie the sections together. Jay also teaches you how to automate these effects such as the reverb time and modulation to help them move over time and keep the interest flowing. Talking about keeping the interest, you will learn exactly how to create contrast between the various sections of your track. This Module is the perfect follow-on from the last one

Module 6 - Mixing & Mastering

No one is going to want to hear your track if it sounds like a mess, so it's really important to get the elements of your mix balanced together. A lot of this has been done already so in this last section we address the mix with fresh ears and fine tune the mix with automation, panning, compression and EQ. Some automation is essential like getting a certain element to be heard at the right times. Some automation can be creative such as making a particular element go wider in the mix at some but not all of the mix (such as the chorus). In the final lesson, you learn the best way to approach basic mastering with Cubase stock plugins. You'll learn why, how, and the best way to apply EQ, compression and limiting.
