Module 1 - Getting Started

After a short intro, your tutor Jay takes you through setting up your project, including sample rates and setting up FX channels. He talks about where to find suitable samples within Cubase and where to find authentic Techno samples on the net. He also explains the different ways to get the samples into Cubase for manipulation and using built in tools such as the sampler track. We find a suitable Techno kick drum and learn how to manipulate and adapt the sample and also layer it with a higher, more percussive sample, resulting in a unique, fat and fully rounded kick drum. This is absolutely essential in Techno music. The bass and bass rumble is also very important and is up next.

Module 2 - Bass & Rumble

The bass is the driving force of your techno track and it's very important to get the energy right. In this second module, we continue to build the foundation of the track by creating the iconic bass rumble. It's not as easy as it seems but our step by step lessons will have you creating your own in no time. You'll then learn how to add an additional bassline over the top to compliment the rumble. This is made with the in-built synth Retrologue. Throughout this course, only stock plugins and VSTs are used.

In the last section, stock distortion plugins are used to give the effect of tape saturation together with some reverb and EQ to help the new bass line sit in the low end.

Module 3 - BG FX & Acid Line

So the foundations of the track have been built. We now need to build up from this with the very important background effects. In techno there is always a background atmosphere and this can be created with little hits, stabs and knocks with plenty of delay and reverb. You'll learn how to create your own sounds and how to position them in the mix with plugins and EQ. Then, it's onto the main focus of our track - the acid line. In some forms of techno (mostly acid techno) there is the iconic sound of the Roland TB-303 and some kind of acid lead or bass. You'll learn how to create a 303 style acid arpeggiated lead using nothing more than Retrologue and another in-built plugin called Morph Filter.

Module 4 - Arrangement & Track Structure

Ahh, the one place most people go wrong or need help with the most! Jay shows you a simple and easy way on how to structure this track and any future tracks you may produce. We also talk about the different sections of a typical electronic track and show you clearly the lengths, characteristics and reasons for each part. We include dynamics, tension, release, variation, interest and more. Here the intention is always to keep the listener pulled in and interested in our track throughout the various different sections. To do this we use plenty of FX and automation. In Techno you want sounds continually evolving and changing and you'll learn how to do this.

Module 5 - Vocal & Track Fills

It's not essential to have a vocal sample in your techno track but it's an option and we explore this in Module 5. We find a suitable sample and cut and time stretch it so it fits on the beat and sounds fat and rhythmic. It adds energy to the track once given the EQ, compression and delay treatments and it will work together with the acid line to be the main focus of our track. Learn about the importance of call and response and where to place the samples to achieve the best results. We also add in more drums, background FX, impacts, hats, rides, risers, snare rolls and much more to fill out the track and to keep the energy rising and falling. All essential attributes to the techno genre.

Module 6 - Mixing & Mastering

No one is going to want to hear your track if it sounds lifeless, messy or dull, so it's really important to get the elements of your mix balanced together properly. Jay explains that you need to think of 3 different axis whilst mixing rather than just left / right stereo spread. You'll learn different methods in gaining separation and how to use a reference track to assist you. On top of this, Jay will teach you how to separate your mix into groups and separate the low end from the rest so the mix can be more finely tuned. In the final lesson Jay shows you the best way to approach basic mastering with Cubase stock plugins, what to look out for when referencing and lots of other tips and tricks.
