Course Structure

Module 1 - Creating The Groove

After a brief introduction from your tutor Demis, you'll get straight into creating the all important groove of your minimal house track. This comprises of shaping and controlling the kick drum, and complimenting this with well chosen percussion samples. Demis demonstrates the need for fine detail EQ on each percussive element, to enable the mix to sound clean and professional, even at this early stage. You'll learn how to use compression to bring out the energy more, along with timing techniques such as swing, to add more ryhthm and groove.

Module 2 - Vocal Chops

In the 2nd module, Demis will teach you how to take a spoken vocal phrase from a pack and turn it into a catchy off beat hook by chopping it up and sculpting it with EQ, reverb and compression. This adds even more groove to your beat that you made in the last module and adds to the overall vibe of the track. You'll also learn how to use the sampler track within Cubase and its controls such as pitch and ADSR envelopes.

Module 3 - Bass and Low End

Then onto the massively important bass and low end processing. Firstly, Demis builds the bass and sub bass layers with pre-made Vital synth presets. He is an expert sound designer so you're definitely going to learn a few things here.

He also explains the importance of getting the low end right in your mix as this is where most of the energy lies - but it's also easy to get this wrong. You'll learn how to avoid common pitfalls and how to get your kick and bass to compliment each other rather than conflicting.

Module 4 - Song Structure

The song structure or arrangement is hugely important too as this is responsible for keeping the listener interested throughout your track. Demis takes you through his own personal workflow in building out the song from a loop / idea to a fully structured track and explains the need for different sections and transitions. This module will serve as a direct lead-in to the next one as you'll prepare for automating the different stages of the track (the journey) and pay more attention to detailed mixing decisions.

Module 5 - Automation & Mixing

This is a big module where you'll get to see Demis's production experience shine through. You'll also see his attention to detail in getting a clean and professional mix and you'll pick up no end of useful tips and techniques.

He'll teach you how to automate many things in this mix such as filters, reverb and delays to achieve the important tension and release required for the different sections of your track. You'll also get to grips with compression, EQ, reverb and delay, to get all the elements sitting in their own space, so they can all be heard clearly.

Module 6 - Mastering

In the final module, Demis shows you how to put the final polish on your track, known as the mastering stage. However, in this course he has shown 2 different ways to approach this. One method uses insert plugins and the other uses the in-built channel strip in Cubase. What's best? Decide for yourself. Either way, you'll learn what to listen for when mastering and to not be swayed by what's happening visually on screen.

Experience

There is no way around it. If you want to get good at making music, you need to gain experience. When you follow our Cubase tutorial, that is exactly what you are getting, not just the theory, or someone explaining what each button does (when you have no context to understand it in the first place). On this course you get real, practical experience, that will actually help you make your own music.

Music Production Skills

It's all good learning about Cubase, but if you don't know anything about music production you will never get anywhere. In this course you learn music production skills at the same time as learning about Cubase. Not only that, but you learn them in a linear fashion, which is the same as when you work on projects in the real world. This approach is far more effective than traditional training methods.

Inspiration

In this course you'll gain many inspiring ways to help you take your mixes from beginner to pro, including the steps required to get you there. Everything from coming up with melodies, to adding new textures and sounds. The possibilities are endless and you'll go away with a load of easy to repeat ideas that you can use in your own tracks.

Reward

There is nothing quite like the satisfaction felt when you see yourself improving from track to track, improving your skills and seeing the results. In each and every lesson of this course, you will progress as a music producer, and mould your track until it is at a pro/commercial level. Going from a basic mix to a pro level mix step by step, will help give you the confidence to take your own tracks to the same level in each and every project you undertake.

YOUR TUTOR

Demis Hellen (professional producer, tutor & DJ) has been making tunes for over 20 years and has been teaching for the last 9 of them, on Youtube and in one on one sessions. Demis's main genre of choice is Trance, but he has produced in many genres over the years, from progressive house to orchestral.

Demis has mastered many DAW's over his career, from Ejay, Ableton Live, Cubase, and more. He produces better at night when there are no distractions, and bad or good days, his advice is to always produce some music, because that idea you had may one day become a masterpiece.
