Module 1 - Mix Preparation

Mix preparation is the key to successful pop mixing. In this first module you will learn all the skills you need to start in the right way with the right knowledge. By the end of this module you will have a deep understanding of - project setup, the commonly misunderstood 'Pan Law', how to mix using 'LUFS' metering to get real world levelled mixes, sample rate and bit depth. Eddie also covers how to setup your workspace and why it is much more helpful to keep things simple, all explained in the context of mixing.

Module 2 - Cleaning Up The Elements

Cleaning up sounds, does not seem like it should make a huge difference to your mixes, but Eddie will show you otherwise. Here he takes all of the stems of the project that need it and cleans them up using various tools so that he is left with a pristine and balanced bit of audio. The difference to the whole mix is night and day and highlights the importance of cleaning and preparing each element of the mix. This is one of the 'secrets' to getting those super clean Pop mixes.

Module 3 - Vocal Processing

As with all Pop mixes, the vocals play a huge roll in conveying the energy, the meaning and the emotion of the song. For that reason it is vital that they are treated correctly on an individual and 'whole mix' level. After being professionally cleaned they are then processed with all the normal tools like EQ and compression. Any sibilance is tamed with a 'de-esser' and the vocal is finalized with excitation and saturation. You will learn how to use all these tools in conjunction with each other to get pro results every time.

Module 4 - Drum Processing

Drums are also an integral part of the 'Pop mix' and provide the rhythm needed to get the 'nod' going for your listener. They help propel the track along and need to sound crisp, punchy and tight but also not take anything away from the other elements of your track. You will learn how to treat the drums on an individual level but just as importantly you will learn the art of making them fit and work properly with the rest of your mix. All this is done using the standard tools of your trade, compression, EQ, distortion to name a few.

Module 5 - Low End Processing

In modern Pop music the bass plays an increasingly important roll of providing warmth and punch to your mixes. Used correctly the low end of your mix will 'make' a Pop track. Here you will learn how to process bass hits and how to process them to sound clean and balanced and sit correctly in the mix. You will also learn how to get the bass to cut through the mix in a balanced way so it does not take anything away from the other elements of your mix, but still provides that warm punch to the low end of your mixes.

Module 6 - Mix Balancing

Eddie is an expert on 'gain staging' and 'mix balancing'. Here you will learn from him how to get a correctly balanced volume mix using a white noise reference, how to side chain elements against each other to create space, how to use send effects to add sweetness to your mix and much more. In this final stage Eddie will take you through his knowledge of gain staging and how he goes about 'colouring' the elements of his mix to help each element sit in it's own space. Finally Eddie will cover the details of the final render with respect to having it mastered and what settings you should use.
