Module 1 - Let's Get Started
After a short intro from your tutor Jon, you'll set up your project and Cubase so you're ready to go. As we start to build the foundation of our track, the drums, we'll be covering the basic functions of Cubase like editing sounds, mixer functions, how to use sends for reverb. We'll start importing and manipulating MIDI files and we'll start using virtual instruments (VST's) to make some sounds. Basic processing with plug in FX like reverb and EQ is also covered here.
Module 2 - Leads & Melodies
The melody is the soul of your track and important to get right. Here we'll look at the rules governing the creation of the melody and you'll get to grips with working inside the confines of a scale to get a much nicer sounding musical structure for your track. We'll be looking at how to make chords and the basic rules that govern them and we'll create extra harmonic parts like pads, arpegiators to fill out your track and make it more vibrant and pleasing to the ear.
Module 3 - Vocal Processing
Module 3 dives into Cubase's more advanced editing and processing features as we take a vocal and start to correct errors in the performance. We'll be easily correcting pitch errors in Cubase's Vari Audio and also timing issues using timestretch to transform a mediocre vocal performance into much better sounding one. We'll be looking at ways to fatten up a mono vocal take as well, employing reverb and stereo delay to make it sound bigger.
Module 4 - Mixing Vocals
Here we'll dive into how to process your vocals so they have a professional finish to them. We'll be looking in more detail at the mixer function in Cubase and looking how and why vocal compression is so important. We'll be processing the vocals to give them a 'shine' that will help them stand out from the rest of the mix and how to give them depth and character in the mix. We'll also touch on using some more specialized third party plug ins so you know what's out there.
Module 5 - Arranging Your Deep House Track
Having a good arrangement is vital to keeping the listener pulled into your track. Here you'll learn useful functions within Cubase to add personality to your track. We'll be making breakdowns and build ups and learning all about tension and release. We'll be looking in detail at the automation functions within Cubase and how to use them to create a sense of urgency. We'll also cover more advanced MIDI manipulation techniques.
Module 6 - Mixing Your Deep House Track
No one is going to want to hear your remix if it sounds like a mess, so it's really important to get the elements of your mix balanced together. In the remaining lessons we'll delve deep into the tools Cubase offers you to balance and polish your track so it sounds good on as many playback mediums as possible. Everything from correcting 'problem' frequencies to creating depth and giving the vocal more presence is covered.
