What Is Stem Separation?
Stem separation (also called source separation or unmixing) is the process of extracting individual elements from a mixed audio file. Tips for Better Results
Use the highest quality source file. MP3s produce worse separations than WAV or FLAC files. If you're separating from a streaming source, download or rip at the highest quality available.
Dense mixes are harder. A sparse acoustic track separates beautifully. A heavily compressed, layered EDM track is much harder. If the result has artefacts, try a different tool - they each handle different genres differently.
Post-process the stems. After separation, use EQ to clean up any frequency bleed, and use a noise gate to remove quiet artefacts during silent passages. A little post-processing goes a long way toward making separated stems sound natural.

A Note on Copyright: Stem separation is a tool - how you use the separated stems matters legally. Extracting stems from copyrighted music for personal practice or study is generally fine.
