Your computer is the most important piece of equipment in your studio. It runs your DAW, hosts your virtual instruments, processes your effects, records your audio, and handles everything in real time. Get the specs right and production is smooth and creative. Get them wrong and you'll spend more time fighting your computer than making music.
What Each Spec Actually Does (In Plain English)

Before diving into recommendations, here's what each component does for music production specifically, because music production uses your computer very differently from gaming, video editing, or office work.
CPU (processor) is the single most important spec. Every plugin, every virtual instrument, every effect runs on the CPU. When your track has 40 channels, each with EQ, compression, and reverb, your CPU is processing all of that simultaneously in real time. A faster CPU means more plugins, more tracks, and lower latency without audio glitches. For music production, single-core speed matters as much as core count, because most DAWs process individual signal chains on a single core.
RAM (memory) determines how many instruments and samples you can have loaded at once. When you load a virtual piano, orchestra library, or drum kit, the samples sit in RAM for instant playback. The real deciding factor for most producers is their DAW. If you want Logic Pro, you need a Mac. If you use Cubase, Ableton, FL Studio, or any other cross-platform DAW, the choice comes down to budget and personal preference. A well-configured PC at £600 can match or outperform a Mac at £1,000 for pure audio processing power.

The unified memory architecture, power efficiency, and near-silent operation make Apple Silicon Macs some of the best music production machines available. Desktop vs Laptop
Desktops give you more power per pound, better cooling (which means quieter operation and sustained performance), more ports, and easier upgradability. If your studio is in a fixed location, a desktop is the smarter investment.
Laptops give you portability - produce on the sofa, at a café, in a hotel room, on stage. Modern laptops are powerful enough for serious production work. The MacBook Pro M4 and high-end Windows laptops handle demanding sessions without issue. The trade-off is higher cost for equivalent performance, limited upgradability, and potentially noisier fan operation under heavy load.

Your computer's built-in audio is fine for listening to Spotify, but it's not designed for music production. Even if you never record a microphone, an audio interface improves your monitoring quality.

Fan Noise: The Spec Nobody Talks About
Here's something most computer guides don't mention: if you record audio in the same room as your computer, fan noise matters enormously. A sensitive condenser microphone will pick up a noisy computer fan from across the room. This affects your vocal recordings, acoustic guitar takes, and anything recorded with a mic.
Apple Silicon Macs are exceptionally quiet, often running completely silent during music production. The Mac Mini M4 has no fan noise audible at normal listening distances. This is one of the strongest practical arguments for choosing a Mac if you record audio.
