"Why doesn't my track sound as loud as professional releases?" It's one of the most common questions in music production. The answer isn't just "use a louder limiter" - real loudness comes from the mix itself, not just the master bus. Here's how to get genuinely louder, punchier tracks without destroying your dynamics.
Why Your Track Isn't Loud Enough (It's Not the Limiter)
Most producers reach for a limiter on the master bus and crank it up. The track gets louder, but it also gets worse - squashed, distorted, lifeless. The real problem is usually upstream. A muddy mix can't be made loud cleanly. Frequency clashes eat up headroom. Uncontrolled dynamics force the limiter to work too hard.
Real loudness starts in the mix. A clean, balanced, well-structured mix can be pushed louder with minimal effort. A messy mix fights the limiter at every turn. Most of this guide focuses on mix techniques because that's where 80% of your loudness potential lives.

Step 1: Gain Staging
Gain staging means making sure every channel in your mix is at a sensible level before any processing. If individual tracks are too hot (peaking near 0dB), your mix bus overloads before you even reach the master. If they're too quiet, you lose resolution and add noise when you boost later.
The target: Set every individual channel so it peaks around -12dB to -6dB. This gives your mix bus plenty of headroom. Your master bus should peak around -6dB to -3dB before any master bus processing. This headroom is what gives your limiter room to work cleanly.
Don't confuse fader level with loudness. Turning everything up doesn't make the mix louder - it just clips the bus. True loudness comes from the relative balance and frequency content, not the raw level.
Step 2: Cut the Mud
Low-frequency mud is the number one loudness killer. Every instrument that has unnecessary energy below 100Hz is eating headroom that your kick and bass need. The limiter reacts to the loudest peaks in the mix, and invisible low-frequency buildup creates peaks you can't even hear clearly.
High-pass everything except kick and bass. Put a high-pass filter on every channel except the kick drum and bass. Set it around 80-120Hz for most instruments, higher for vocals (150-200Hz), hi-hats (300Hz+), and bright synths (200Hz+). This single technique frees up more headroom than any mastering plugin.
Cut the 200-400Hz range selectively. This is where mud accumulates. Check your pads, guitars, vocals, and piano in this range. If they sound "boxy" or "thick" in a bad way, a gentle 2-3dB cut with a wide Q cleans things up dramatically. For more detail, read our EQ guide.
Step 3: Compress for Consistency
Compression reduces the gap between quiet and loud moments, allowing you to bring the overall level up without the peaks clipping. But heavy compression on individual tracks is the wrong approach - it kills dynamics and sounds unnatural.
Light compression on individual channels (2-4dB of reduction) tames the biggest peaks while keeping the natural feel. Use a slow attack to preserve transients (the initial punch of drums and plucks) and a medium release that follows the groove.
Bus compression on the mix bus (1-3dB of reduction) glues everything together and adds perceived loudness without obvious squashing. A VCA-style compressor with a slow attack, auto release, and 2:1 ratio is the classic approach.
Parallel compression is the secret weapon. Blend a heavily compressed copy of your drums (or full mix) underneath the original. You get the punch and energy of heavy compression without losing the dynamics of the original. This is how professional mixes sound simultaneously loud and dynamic.
Step 4: Saturation and Harmonics
Saturation adds harmonic overtones that make sounds feel louder and fuller without actually increasing the peak level. This is why analogue recordings sound "bigger" than digital - the tape and circuitry naturally add saturation.
Add subtle saturation to individual channels (drums, bass, vocals) or to the mix bus. Tape emulation plugins like Chow Tape Model (free) or FabFilter Saturn work beautifully. The goal is warmth and presence, not audible distortion - if you can hear the saturation as distortion, you've gone too far.
Step 5: The Limiter (Finally)
Now that your mix is clean, balanced, and well-structured, the limiter's job is easy. It just catches the final peaks and brings the overall level up to streaming standards.
Set your ceiling to -1dB. This prevents inter-sample clipping (digital distortion that occurs between samples when converting to MP3/AAC for streaming).
Push the input gain until you reach your target LUFS (see below). Watch for more than 3-4dB of gain reduction on peaks. If the limiter is working harder than that, go back to the mix and fix the problem there - don't force it through the limiter.
Use Youlean Loudness Meter (free) on your master bus to measure integrated LUFS. This is the standard loudness measurement used by every streaming platform.
LUFS Targets for Streaming
Spotify: -14 LUFS integrated. Spotify normalises everything to this level, so mastering louder than -14 actually gets turned down and loses dynamics for no benefit.
Apple Music: -16 LUFS. Slightly quieter target with more dynamic range preserved.
YouTube: -14 LUFS.
SoundCloud: No normalisation - louder masters will sound louder.
The practical advice: Master to -14 LUFS integrated with a -1dB true peak ceiling. This works well across all platforms. If your genre demands louder (EDM, hip-hop), you can push to -10 to -8 LUFS, but know that Spotify and Apple Music will turn it down anyway.
The Most Important Principle: Loudness is a consequence of a good mix, not a substitute for one. A well-mixed track at -14 LUFS sounds more powerful, punchy, and professional than a poorly mixed track crushed to -6 LUFS. Fix the mix first, always.
