Who is running this

Born To Produce is a Steinberg Certified Training Centre founded by Jon Merritt and Jay Hales. We have been teaching music production for over 15 years and have taught more than 15,000 students through our courses, templates and sample libraries.

Blackwaxx Records is co-hosting. The original track, Basement Fever, is a vocal progressive house release by Jon under his and Jay's production name Dirty Inc, out on Blackwaxx earlier this year.

The competition

Producers download the official stems, remix the track, and submit one entry. Born To Produce shortlists, and Blackwaxx Records selects the winners. Entry is free and open to producers worldwide.

We are promoting it through a dedicated YouTube video with paid ad support, our mailing list, our student community, the major remix competition listing platforms, and the producer communities on Reddit, Discord and Facebook. Based on the reach behind it we are expecting several hundred entries.

What partners get

  • Named placement on the competition page. Your logo and prize listed in the prize pool, live for the full entry window and beyond.
  • A mention in the announcement video. Our competition video is the centrepiece of the campaign and carries paid promotion behind it.
  • Inclusion across the email campaign. Every announcement, reminder and results email that goes to entrants and to our list.
  • Social and community coverage. Announcement posts, reminders and the winners reveal across our channels and our student community.
  • Presence in every external listing. We list the competition on the main remix competition platforms and in producer communities. Partners are named in the prize details.
  • An optional guest judging slot. If you would like someone from your team on the judging panel, we would welcome it.
  • Six weeks of sustained attention. Entrants live with this competition for the whole entry window, not a single post.

What we are asking for

Software licences, subscriptions or sound content for our winners and runners up. Typically between three and ten, depending on what makes sense for you. There is no cash cost and no fee involved either way.

We would also love partners to share the competition with their own audience when it opens. That is genuinely the more valuable half for both sides, and we will supply assets and copy so it takes you minutes rather than hours.

Confirmed so far

Suno are on board as a prize partner, providing annual Premier subscriptions. The vocal on the original track was created using Suno, which is disclosed openly in the competition and in the accompanying tutorial.

How we run it

The things brands usually want to check before putting their name on a competition.

Entrants keep their remix
We take a non-exclusive licence to feature entries for promotion. We do not take ownership of anyone's work. Commercial release only happens under a separate agreement the winner signs with the label.
This is a production competition
AI is permitted as a tool for ideas, drums, one-shots and processing. It is not permitted as a substitute for production. Entrants must arrange, sound-design and mix the track themselves, and anyone shortlisted has to supply DAW footage showing their session before a prize is awarded.
Judging is independent of prizes
Born To Produce shortlists and Blackwaxx Records selects the winners. Partners provide prizes and promotion, and have no influence on the outcome.
Free entry, no purchase
Entry is free and does not require buying anything. Uncleared third-party samples are prohibited and entrants confirm their work is original.
Data handled properly
Entrants give an email address to receive the stems and competition updates. Marketing consent is a separate, optional opt-in under UK GDPR. Partners do not receive entrant data.
No exclusivity
We are working with a small number of partners across software, sounds and AI tools. Full terms and conditions are available on request.
