Course Structure

Module 1 - Set Up & Chords

After a short intro from your tutor Jay, we start talking about what makes a typical progressive house track and the best way to approach such a track. He also explains how he produces a track and in what order, as this has been requested many times from students.

After a simple beat is made you will learn how to make a simple chord progression using Cubase's in-built Chord Pads, and then how to make it a lot more interesting by adding tensions and inversions. Don't know music theory? Don't worry, as we start at the very beginning and use the tools in Cubase to help us.

Module 2 - Melody & Pads

So in this 2nd module you will learn the process Jay uses to get ideas for a lead melody; the main aspect of this progressive house song, that will sit over the top of the chord progression we've just made. We look at the different synths in Cubase available and adapting the sound to fit.

Jay then shows you how to sculpt yourself a pad sound made 100% from scratch in Retrologue - so you learn synthesis and sound design too. These are all great skills to have when you make your own tracks.

We finish this module by setting up some FX channels and learning about send FX channels.

Module 3 - Bass, Arp & Drums

Next we move onto the very important bass which along with the drums is equally fundamental to the basis of any EDM track. Using the in-built VST synth Retrologue, you'll learn how to make an appropriate bass sound and sculpt it accordingly to mix so it fits perfectly into your track. We then start adding other melodic elements with Halion SE such as an arpeggiator etc. As always, sculpting the sounds with EQ, compression, FX as we go along. This way we get an even mix and it saves a lot of headaches in the mixing stage. We finish by adding some more drum elements to this ever building track and tuning the kick.

Module 4 - Arrangement / Track Structure

Ahh, the one place most people go wrong or need help with the most! The structure of the track!

Jay shows you a simple and easy way on how to structure this track and any future tracks you may produce.

Learn about the different sections of a typical electronic track and the lengths, characteristics and reasons for each part. You will learn about; dynamics, tension, release, variation, creating interest and much more. Here the intention is always to keep the listener pulled in and interested in our track throughout the various different sections. This is an area that often gets overlooked in EDM so it's important to get it right.

Module 5 - Adding FX & Variation

In Module 5 you will learn how and where to add effects within your track and the reasons why. You will learn a number of techniques on creating your own sounds and manipulating them in such a way that they fit into the mix and importantly tie sections together. We also teach how to automate these effects such as the reverb time and delays so they get bigger/longer over time to increase tension and release. Another skill you will learn is how to create your own white noise sweep and learn how to use autopan, pumping FX etc and cut-off modulation to add interest. Talking about keeping the interest, you will learn exactly how to create contrast between the various sections of a track.

Module 6 - Mixing & Mastering

No one is going to want to hear your track if it sounds like a mess, so it's really important to get the elements of your mix balanced together. In this last section we address some elements with fresh ears and fine tune the mix with automation. Jay explains the importance of giving your ears a rest and listening on other systems. You'll learn how to automate delays for breakdowns in line with typical progressive tracks and how to introduce the next element and section within your mix, all the while adapting the FX to suit the mood in the track.
