Course Structure

Course Structure

Module 1 - Song Writing

After a brief welcome, your tutor Jay starts with tips on how to come up with an idea for your song. He then explains his own personal methods for lyric writing and also giving common examples of how lyrics are typically put together and how they are rhymed.

We then get into writing a catchy chord structure. Again, this comes with many tips / tricks and common examples of successful songs to put you on the right path. We also discuss tools that are available these days to help if you don't know music theory very well.

In this first Module, you'll also learn how to put together a catchy song structure. This is essential before you start recording.

Module 2 - Recording

In this 2nd module, Jay will teach you how to record an acoustic guitar and a vocal. But, before that we have preparation to do. You'll learn how to make a recording plan, how to setup Cubase correctly and many tips picked up over the years to stop you making common mistakes and costing you time and headaches.

Learn the different microphone types and best positions to get the most professional results, different recording techniques, how to avoid common pitfalls, how to get the best out of your performer, where to find musicians, and much more.

This Module will ensure your recording session will go as smoothly as possible.

Module 3 - Processing

So we now have a tonne of recording takes for both guitar and vocals and it can seem quite daunting at first. It's difficult to know where to start so Jay gives you his method for deciding what to keep, what to discard and his colour grading system. You'll then learn how to 'comp' which means taking the best bits out of the takes to create one 'best' take. We'll end up with 3 main 'best' takes for vocals and guitars, as well as guitar 'extras' to keep our song interesting.

Along the way, you'll be cleaning the audio, using corrective and creative EQ, compression, pitch correcting, time correcting, creating backing vocals and making sure they fit at the right points of the track, and much more.

Module 4 - Adding More Elements

This 4th Module is about adding extra elements such as drums, bass guitar, fills, and little extras to keep the song interesting.

We use Cubase's Groove Agent to create our authentic sounding live drum track and Jay shows you a free plugin to emulate a bass guitar. Of course you can record your own bass guitar by following the steps in Module 2.

We also add to the arrangement. You will learn about; dynamics, energy curve, tension, release, variation and creating interest. Here the intention is always to keep the listener pulled in and interested in our track throughout the various different sections. This is an area that often gets overlooked in production so it's important to get it right.

Module 5 - Mixing & Mastering

The key to a great mix is balance and separation between your elements. Some of this has been done already so in this section we address the mix with fresh ears and fine tune the mix with automation, panning, compression and EQ. Jay shows you pro tips such as how to widen the guitar and bring it to life. This is done by routing the dry and wet signals to different sides of the mix. You'll also discover the power of using 2 compressors (different types) in series. After the mixing lessons, you'll learn basic mastering with Cubase stock plugins. You learn the best way to approach it and why you are doing what you're doing. Mastering is a precise and delicate practice and can easily be done wrong, so don't worry - we've got you.

Module 6 - Promotion

In the final Module, Jay provides you with his own personal tips and experiences on how to promote your own tracks and get them heard. He has also done some extra research for you and all the information and tips are conveyed to you in a clear manner.

Learn the best sites to upload your music to, free and paid ones, how to optimise your profile and chances of being heard and lots of other ideas and websites that you've probably never heard of, to help with getting your music discovered.

Lots of tips / tricks and common pitfalls are all here to make this an essential section of this course. After all, you've spent a long time planning, recording and mixing your track - it needs to be heard! Right?
