Course Structure

Course Structure

Module 1 - Getting Started

After a quick intro from your tutor Jay, you'll get straight into making an 80's sounding beat using retro samples and using the famous gated reverb technique. You'll also learn about some 80s sounding, third-party free reverb plugins and how to tweak them to get the required sound. We finish up this module by installing and using the free synth Vital, learning how to create a patch that sounds old school and applying EQ to achieve that retro vibe.

Module 2 - Bass & Sub Bass

This module is devoted to the low end (super important) and making a retro bass patch in Vital. Jay will demonstrate how to take a preset patch you like from a different synth and then how to recreate this in the free synth vital. Here, you will improve your listening and sound design skills no end. You'll also discover the importance of separating your sub bass out to its own individual track, which comes in handy later in the mixing stages of this track.

Module 3 - Rhythm, Arps, Chords, Pads

In the 3rd module, we start to build out the track where you'll learn many things such as; how to use Vital synth for guitar parts, arpeggiators, strings, brass pads and more. Jay teaches you how to mix the various different layers together to sound thick and cohesive rather than clash with each other. Rhythm and note length are also important here, rather than just focusing on EQ, and Jay will talk you through this. All the while we are creating more layers, we are looking to add various processes such as chorus and EQ to achieve the 80s sound.

Module 4 - Arrangement

We now have enough content in the project and an idea for the vocals so that we can start to think about how the song will play out in its different sections. You'll learn how to structure your track so it ebbs and flows, has high and low energy parts, all to keep the listener interested and engaged. If you struggle to take a song idea and turn it into a full length track then this module will help you get over that hump.

Module 5 - Vocal Processing & More Layers

We have the vocals back from the singer now and it's time to get to work on the processing. Not only will you learn how to fine-tune the vocals, but Jay will also teach you how to process them and make them sound professional just like commercial tracks. He'll take you through a long chain of inserts and sends, using multiple processes along the way to make the vocals explode in the mix. You'll be amazed at the before and after differences. In this module, you'll also be adding many more layers of pads, counter melodies, chorus melodies etc to further thicken the mix and get that 'pro' sound.

Module 6 - Mixing & Mastering

Although we have been mixing as we go, there is still work to be done here. Things like correcting anything obvious to EQ and volume firstly, to fine-tuning elements to sit in their own space, will all be taught in a clear and easy-to-follow manner. Follow along with Jay and learn how to automate various reverb and delay sends to add 'ear candy' and professionalism to your track. Learn how to create group tracks and how to use buss processing on a number of tracks (such as drums) as a whole for a more cohesive sound. You'll use EQ, compression, saturation, reverb, chorus and much more, to not only achieve a pro mix but also to get a retro vibe. We finish off the module with some basic mastering to get it up to release standard.

Experience

There is no way around it. If you want to get good at making music, you need to gain experience. When you follow our Cubase tutorial, that is exactly what you are getting, not just the theory, or someone explaining what each button does (when you have no context to understand it in the first place). On this course you get real, practical experience, that will actually help you make your own music.

Music Production Skills

It's all good learning about Cubase, but if you don't know anything about music production you will never get anywhere. In this course you learn music production skills at the same time as learning about Cubase. Not only that, but you learn them in a linear fashion, which is the same as when you work on projects in the real world. This approach is far more effective than traditional training methods.

Inspiration

In this course you'll gain many inspiring ways to help you take your mixes from beginner to pro, including the steps required to get you there. Everything from coming up with melodies, to adding new textures and sounds. The possibilities are endless and you'll go away with a load of easy to repeat ideas that you can use in your own tracks.

Reward

There is nothing quite like the satisfaction felt when you see yourself improving from track to track, improving your skills and seeing the results. In each and every lesson of this course, you will progress as a music producer, and mould your track until it is at a pro/commercial level. Going from a basic mix to a pro level mix step by step, will help give you the confidence to take your own tracks to the same level in each and every project you undertake.
