Module 1 - Tech House Drums
In this first module you will build your own Tech House drum loop, learning about the types of sounds used and how to give them the Tech House feel by using the swing feature in Cubase. After you have your foundational drum loop, you will then learn how to utilize Groove Agent SE's patterns to add organic drum patterns using 'quick hacks'. This is a neat technique that is easy to implement in any track for any genre.
We'll also be looking at how to replace sounds to get our organic loops to sound like they belong in a Tech House track. You will further utilize Groove Agent's powerful repertoire of patterns to make organic drum fills to keep the track exciting and rolling along.
Module 2 - Sound Design
In this tutorial we want to show you that you are only ever a step away from the perfect sound for your track. This is achieved through using basic to advanced synthesis techniques to craft specific sounds for the purpose at hand.
For example, the bassline that you hear in the track in the 'course overview' video above is made from scratch using subtractive synthesis, along with the siren lead and the big dirty synth lead and more. On top of synthesis you will also learn how to take sound design further with post processing using Cubase stock plugins.
Each sound that we make from scratch is shown in both Retrologue (Cubase Artist & Pro) and in the Tyrell N6 (free synth for Cubase Elements users).
Module 3 - Arrangement
In this module we will look at many different arrangement techniques like utilizing triplet time, making impactful fills using multiple elements and techniques, break downs, build ups and a load more.
With respect to creating amazing tracks, 'tension and release' is paramount in any style of music to help keep the listener engaged and/or the dance floor pumping; it is especially important in genres like Tech House as there is no real musical structure to provide the base tension and release. So you will learn to create as much tension and release as you need in your tracks to keep the tracks flowing and always exciting to listen to. Using a blend or risers, impacts, crashes, down-filters and automation you will make a track that is always engaging and never gets boring.
Module 4 - Vocals
We went out of our way to show you, not just how to use a vocal sample, but how to go about creating a completely unique and original vocal for your Tech House tracks. This includes the process of how to find singers to work with you, through to creative formant shifting and everything in between.
After we have procured our original vocal samples we then import them and start the process of choosing which bits we want to use and the arrangement of them within our track. We of course look at processing all of the vocals so they are balanced on a volume and frequency level so they stand out in the mix.
You will also learn about creative pitch and formant shifting which you can use to add a modern twist to your Tech House track (or any other genre for that matter).
Module 5 - Organic Automation
Automation is vital to making your track come 'alive', it creates a sense of movement, it keeps it interesting and ultimately will keep the listener engaged in your tracks. In this module you will learn how to do all of this using the automation tools in Cubase and more.
Automation does not just come in the form of adding manual automation lanes but also in using modulation plugins/attributes. For example phasers, chorus effects can be used to create a type of automatic automation which you will utilise to keep the elements of your tracks more interesting and give a sense of evolution to your mixes.
Module 6 - Mixing & Mastering
With your track crafted we can now get down to the business of making it sound amazing. You will learn the overarching viewpoint of a mixing engineer. You will take your Tech House track and mix it from the ground up so that it is balanced, lively, open and energetic at all volume levels and in all environments.
You will approach this by first getting the kick and bass of your track to work perfectly so you have a solid foundation for the rest of your mix. Moving on to the drums, balancing volume and frequencies as you go. Leads are next, making sure to get the 'fizz' necessary and then onto the vocals, making sure we have the 'presence' and 'air' needed for them to cut through the mix.
