Course Structure

Course Structure

Module 1 - Creating A Melody

Getting right to it, you'll set up your project and Cubase so you're ready to go. To start with you will learn basic music theory techniques to build a chord progression but will quickly take it further with more advanced techniques that are easy to repeat. This means building complexity from simplicity by starting with a basic triad progression and make it more complex in stages with 7th, 9th chords, borrowed chords, different voicings and more. You will be able to take the same approach and use the same techniques you learn here to make any trance melody you like.

Module 2 -Leads & Layering

You'll learn to synthesize a nice big, detuned Trance lead sound using subtractive synthesis in Cubase's Retrologue. You will then take that sound and make multiple layers, with pitch, stereo and tone variations to make one big sounding lead synth. Layering is a key skill to have in your bag and means you will be able to create bigger, better and completely unique sounds and textures in your productions. We will also be layering drum sounds, using multiple kicks and advanced kick processing to create a nice big and full sound that cuts through your mix and provides the foundation.

Module 3 - Arrangement

Song structure and arrangement in Trance is all about the build up/intro section and the balance of the drop. In this course you will learn how to make energy build gradually over time, introducing new elements as the track progresses in a way that is subtle but really builds the sense of anticipation. You will learn all the tricks you need to have a false drop and how to build the energy even more before the drop. One vital skill in any music is balancing the amount of energy generated (tension) with the amount (release) you get from the drop. You will learn the skills necessary do do this.

Module 4 - Automation

Part of what makes a long build up section work in Trance music is creating movement. You will learn how to do this with many elements in the track, but most of all with the lead melody. As you can hear from the demo track (see the end of the video above), we have extensive and intricate movement on the lead synth that is complex but also constantly building in energy at the same time. You will learn how to do this yourself and how to manipulate it in many different ways using the automation tools in Cubase so you can customize it after having recorded the automation in.

Module 5 - FX & Transitions

Another super important part of building energy in your tracks and keeping them flowing from one section to the next is using FX sounds like risers, impacts and general FX sounds. Here we will use various sources like audio samples and home made effects. With audio we will be picking appropriate sounds and then further manipulating them with the tools in Cubase. You will also learn to make a custom riser/downfilter effect using various processing techniques to make it sound unique and fit in your track.

Module 6 - Mixdown

In this extensive module you will learn how to professionally balance all the elements within your track. We will be looking at processing all the elements on an individual basis, like advanced kick processing, piano brightening, lead group processing, multiband bass compression and much, much more. You will learn about the different type of balancing and how to do them; volume mixing, frequency balancing and picking elements with the right timbre. You will also learn how to do basic mastering, adding shine and punch to your mixes.
