Course Structure

Course Structure

Module 1 - Getting Started

Before you start making this remix from scratch, Jay, your tutor takes you through some of his own personal favourite famous remixes and discusses what made them great and successful. Following on and drawing from his own experience of producing remixes, he talks about the different styles that a remix can be approached from. Again, looking at examples, you will start to get an idea of how to think about and plan your own remixes in the future, what angle to take and how to stand out from the crowd.

Jay then talks about the idea for this progressive trance remix, how it came about and how he brought the idea to fruition.

Module 2 - Music Theory

As always, you will learn to build the 'drop' or the chorus part of the track first as it's the most important part and most difficult to get right. At the same time you'll start finding ways to work out the scale / key of the original song and how to change the chord structure in the new remix version. In this module, we start to build the chords, melody, bass and other elements and really get to grips with the foundation of this remix and decide it's direction. All sounds are made from scratch (more detail in the next module) so you'll be learning key sound design skills and getting your creativity juices flowing. You'll also learn the most important aspects of music theory here whilst making chords.

Module 3 - Sound Design

With so many producers in the world today, it is important to stand out from the crowd. Throughout this tutorial you will learn how to be unique, by learning how to design your own sounds from scratch.

We use an incredible (and completely FREE) synthesizer called 'Vital'. Available for all platforms and all DAW's. Please install Vital.

There are a total of 6 sounds created from the ground up in this tutorial; the main pad, bass, riff and 3 layering elements. We also provide the presets with the tutorial, so you can just load them up if you are not interested in sound design. We also provide all the samples, and stems, to make this as accessible as possible no matter what DAW you are using.

Module 4 - Song Structure

Great song structure is massively important! It's also difficult to get it right. In this module, you'll learn how to create tension and release so your listener is engaged with your music throughout. You'll also learn how to alter the original song structure to suit your new progressive trance style remix and why you are altering it.

We'll create different sections to tell the ups and downs of the story (just like in a good film) that is more in-line with a club track, and that will keep the listener coming back for more, over and over again.

Module 5 - Vocals, SFX & Automation

After processing all of the main and backing vocals (think compression, saturation, etc.) and repositioning them to suit our new structure, we move on to a very important subject and that is Special FX. In any trance or progressive style track the SFX play a large and important part. The risers, down filters, crashes, impacts etc are super important for 2 reasons. They create tension and release and help transition between the different sections of your track. You'll learn how to implement them into your tracks and how to adjust them to fit with processing. Automation plays a key role here and you'll learn just how and when to use it to create effortless and engaging mixes.

Module 6 - Mixing & Mastering

Lastly, you will learn the key skills needed to make sure all your mixes are as epic as possible. Once you understand the importance of compression and saturation, you will find mixing 'big' sounding tracks much easier and fun.

We go through and mix the entire track and you will follow along with the whole process as we do it, learning all about the various techniques and why and when to use them in your own mixes. You'll learn how and when to use compression, EQ, reverb, delay, saturation and other processes and how to get creative by using automation.
