Course Modules
Module 1 - Beginner (8 Video Lessons)
After a short intro you'll learn exactly what Compression is. Your tutor Eddie explains this by going over what a compressor does, how it works and how to use it. Moving on you'll learn about multi-band compression which is compressing certain frequency bands and not others (as opposed to compressing the whole signal). A very handy mixing skill! Eddie then explains Limiting and the differences between that and normal compression. You'll learn about the different types of Limiting and when to use them. And finally in the last few video lessons in this first module, you get to see our pro in action where he shows you how to compress a driving EDM beat, how to apply transparent and parallel compression to a Hip Hop beat and how to compress a rap vocal. This information is coming to you from a pro mixing engineer of over 30 years - thank God for the internet right?
Module 2 - Intermediate (11 Video Lessons)
So moving this up a notch, in Module 2 Eddie goes into detail about all the different types of compressor and when you would use each type. This section comes with audio examples of the before and after processed files. He also explains the 4 different types of compression (upward, downward compression and upward, downward expansion) so you now have a really good feel for a compressor and what it can be used for. Moving on further, Eddie teaches you about sidechain compression and how to pump, swell or duck a beat and when this can be useful in your mixes. Just before the final section, you'll learn about transparent limiting for pre mastering your mixes as well as dynamic and feedback compression techniques.
In the final part of this intermediate module your tutor Eddie gives a detailed look at how he compresses the infamous Roland 808 and 909 drums.
Module 3 - Advanced (3 Video Lessons)
So after the first two modules you're all experts on compression right? Well then, Let's move the level up one more gear and onto the advanced module! Here you'll learn about Negative Limiting. What is it, how does it work, how and when to use it? All these things are covered by Eddie in an easy to understand way. In the 2nd lesson, you'll learn exactly when and why to sidechain upward and downward expansion. Yet another technique of the professionals that most people have never heard of. The 3rd lesson covers a great technique on how to clear up and separate your kick and snares from your melody by sidechaining the mid and sides.
This course on compression really does cover all the bases and then some so you'll be able to mix your own tracks with complete confidence.
