Module 1 - Recording & Comping

Here we talk about some of the myths of vocal recording and what you can realistically expect to get from processing and tuning the vocal. We’ll take a quick look at lanes / playlists and their benefits for recording. Learn tips for recording to make the later stage of processing easier, what content to record and how you can get some really creative results by letting the singer free-style. We cover how to use the comping tool and how to comp if your DAW does not have one. Learn different approaches to comping, what to listen for when comping and what we can correct later in the processing stage.

Module 2 - Pitch & Timing Correction

We show you what software to use for pitch correction and how much pitch correction to use. Learn a simple technique for finding out what scale your track is in and for reducing unwanted vibrato from certain words. We look at finite editing of the vocal, removing unwanted breaths, clicks and artefacts but leaving parts that make the vocal sound natural. Learn how to use time stretching on phrases that are sung too quickly or slowly and get them back in time with the track to get a super tight performance. How to match up doubled tracks to get them to fit perfectly to the main vocal.

Module 3 - Vocal Tuning & Mixing

We teach you how to use a compressor for vocals and the pitfalls to look out for. Then EQ, how to find any problem frequencies and tame them down, boost nice frequencies and give the vocal some ‘air’. Next we look at creating stereo width, fatness and thickening up the vocal by using the harmonies and doubled tracks and then getting them to sit further back in the mix. This module also covers Group / Bus channel vocal mixing techniques and approach. We also show you clever tips like creating stereo width using delay and using compressor doubling to make the vocal jump forwards in the mix.

Module 4 - Parallel Processing

In this Module Jon fully explains parallel processing, it's benefits and how to set it up. Including how to fatten up the vocal using saturation / distortion, how to apply boost and lift to emphasize specific frequencies of the vocal, how to use different FX like stereo wideners, sound mangling FX and distortion, how to use short delays and short reverb to fatten up a vocal and add “clean distortion”, how to bring out the attack and add punch to vocals, make them have more impact and cut through the mix. Jon also teaches you the foundations so that you can then build your own unique processes on which can help you develop your own individual and unique sound.

Module 5 - Doubles, Triples & Harmonies

Module 5 is all about getting your vocals to sound 'thick' and full. Jon shows you how to get extra vocal tracks out of the unused vocal takes that did not make the main comped vocal. How to process a single vocal to get a take you can use for doubling and then tripling. How to double, off set and pitch shift a single track to create stereo width and fatten up your main vocal. Learn how to find harmonies the easy way. Discover how to get MIDI information out of your vocal performance to then thicken it up using a VST instrument. You'll also learn some of the creative ways in which you can help emphasize your vocal and get a different sound in your track.

Module 6 - Advanced Mixing Techniques In The Structure

This final Module teaches you how to approach mixing your vocal into your final mixdown. Learn plenty of tips and tricks and what the ethos of mixing is -   looking at the bigger picture. Discover secrets such as giving the chorus vocals more impact by creating contrast between the verse and the chorus vocals using automation. Or automating the volume of tracks before they go through the compressor to give them greater dynamic range in the verses and then heavier compression in the chorus.

Also how to route everything in the track to one group / bus so you can then EQ and create space for the vocal to sit better in the overall mix.
