Cubase Tutorial - From Beginner To Pro

The reason we get great reviews...

This tutorial took over three solid months of planning and execution, and it contains fundamental lessons, techniques, and skills, all boiled down into easy to understand practical steps.. Simple, powerful & fun.

This is a completely standalone course, but for anyone who has completed our 'Cubase 12 Beginners Tutorial', we take the project from the last lesson of that course, and use that as our starting place for this course. So it is the perfect continuation, where you'll learn more advanced uses of Cubase & production.

Course Structure

Course Structure

Module 1 - Setting Up & Installing Free Plugins

After a quick intro from your tutor Jay, he'll then guide you through how to set up the project from the downloaded workfiles, so you can follow along yourself with the pro mix. You will learn so much more by actually producing the track yourself rather than just watching somebody else do it via video lessons. He'll also guide you through installing some very useful free plugins which will help you get this mix to pro level.

Module 2 - Extra Guitars & Vocals

The first mix was quite sparse, and the key to a full, big mix is layering. So we import some extra guitar layers to thicken the sound in places, and in the next module we'll process these further. You'll also learn the importance of adding vocal adlibs to make the song more interesting and different for the last chorus. Song structure is very important in a 3 minute pop track.

Module 3 - Group Mixing

The goal of this 'pro mix' is to get a bigger and fuller mix that sounds professional and radio ready. Now that we have some extra guitars and vocals in our track, we need to start group mixing the various elements as a whole (eg. all of the guitars, all of the vocals etc.) to make them sound more cohesive together. Then after that, we can apply processes such as further compression and saturation to make them sound larger. Multiple layers of these processes is the key to getting that 'wall of sound' and higher energy levels. You won't believe the difference from the basic mix to the pro mix after this.

Module 4 - Going The Extra Mile

This module will teach you the importance of spending a lot of time and effort on your mixes, and going that extra mile with many minor tweaks that add up to a better, more pro mix. For example, we tweak the hats, ride and cymbals for a more aggressive feel, we re-process the bass guitar for a warmer low end, we see how more advanced vocal tuning and comping is done, we replace the synth riff with a slightly cleaner sound, we set up and adjust different reverb sends and levels to create more space within our mix and more.

Module 5 - Mix Tightening / Chorus Stand Out

In a 3 minute pop track, the chorus is usually the most important aspect of the track. It is usually the deciding factor in listener engagement. Therefore, the chorus needs to stand out above the rest of the song. In part of this module, you will learn tricks so you can do exactly that in your own mixes. You'll learn how to automate with EQ. volume and panning to make the chorus come alive. We'll also be making many more small tweaks to the mix to tighten and increase the quality of this production. For example, you'll learn how to 'duck' a small part of the guitars' frequency range out of the way every time the vocals play, meaning more space for the vocals.

Module 6 - Bonus Recording Lessons

In this bonus module, you'll learn some microphone basics such as types and polar patterns. We'll also go through different Cubase recording modes, setting up headphone mixes in the 'control room' and a useful reverb panning trick for acoustic guitars.

What are you going to get out of it?

What are you going to get out of it?

Experience

There is no way around it. If you want to get good at making music, you need to gain experience. When you follow our Cubase tutorial, that is exactly what you are getting, not just the theory, or someone explaining what each button does (when you have no context to understand it in the first place). On this course you get real, practical experience, that will actually help you make your own music.

Music Production Skills

It's all good learning about Cubase, but if you don't know anything about music production you will never get anywhere. In this course you learn music production skills at the same time as learning about Cubase. Not only that, but you learn them in a linear fashion, which is the same as when you work on projects in the real world. This approach is far more effective than traditional training methods.

Inspiration

In this course you'll gain many inspiring ways to help you take your mixes from beginner to pro, including the steps required to get you there. Everything from coming up with melodies, to adding new textures and sounds. The possibilities are endless and you'll go away with a load of easy to repeat ideas that you can use in your own tracks.

Reward

There is nothing quite like the satisfaction felt when you see yourself improving from track to track, improving your skills and seeing the results. In each and every lesson of this course, you will progress as a music producer, and mould your track until it is at a pro/commercial level. Going from a basic mix to a pro level mix step by step, will help give you the confidence to take your own tracks to the same level in each and every project you undertake.
