Course Modules
Module 1 - Prep (pages 11-30):
Understanding the way different processes work can give you a deeper understanding of how and when to apply them. In this first section Eddie takes you through and explains some fundamental and vital processes like getting the right headroom with 'gain structuring', summing, the 'pan law', frequency smearing, crossovers, metering and much more. Essential knowledge put into concise and easy to understand practical examples.
Module 2 - Mix Bus Effects & Dynamics (pages 31-46):
Covered in this section is; which effects can you use on the Mix Bus and which should you avoid at all costs. How to apply the correct effects and how to correctly apply them without causing damage to your mix is of course vital to making great sounding mixes. Everything from EQ, mutliband compression, harmonic distortion and even delay can be used to make your mixes sound better at the Mix Bus stage.
Module 3 - Compressor Topologies (Pages 47-70):
Picking the right compressor to use on the Mix Bus is a common question and normally mis-understood. Eddie explains how to pick the right one and what the right settings are for the type of song, depending on the tempo, the dynamics and the genre. Using compression effects on the Mix Bus is a fine art and you'll learn how to maintain 'Transient Integrity' to keep your tracks punchy whilst taming the peaks to get a clear and balanced mix.
Module 4 - Energy (Pages 83-92):
We can measure frequencies / pitch but how do we measure the energy of the track? You can have a super balanced and well presented track but if it has the wrong energy or even no energy at all then it will come across as boring or stale. Here Eddie talks about the energy of a mix and he looks at the many processes you can use to manipulate the energy of your tracks at the bus mixing stage to add presence and excitement to your mixes.
Module 5 - Poor Practices (Pages 93-115):
In this section Eddie gives you his 'don't even go there' tips and advice. Many decisions have to be made during the mixing phase of making a track and one of the best ways to get great mixes is to avoid making bad mixing decisions in the first place. You'll learn why avoiding clipping, low frequencies tripping compressors and some stereo widening effects is super important to getting great mixes.
Module 6 - Master Bus Processing (Pages 116-182):
In this last main section Eddie takes you through the different setups and approaches to Master Bus processing. Do you want the processing you apply to be transparent, are you looking to get that silky smooth and professional polish, or perhaps you want a nice airy sounding mix? Setups for any genre and approaches are also covered here giving you all the knowledge you need to give your track that profesional finish.
It took Eddie around 11 months to put this incredible learning resourse together and his expert knowledge and years in the industry working with the likes of the Pet Shop Boys, Busta Rhymes, Spandau Ballet, DJ Shadow (to name a few) really shines thorugh. And if you need any further clarification that Eddie knows what he's on about he also writes articles for Sound On Sound magazine.
